Reason is hot. No synth guy or techno composer should be without it. But what about using Reason for drums? Actually, it’s a perfect companion. In the first article I cover basic drum and Reason setup, and using the NN-19 sampler.

Using Roland TD-8 Drums to Control Reason by joshielevy
I have a TD-8, and here’s what I had to do to get it to properly trigger redrum.
1) I had to map the TD-8 notes to the ten notes on redrum
2) For the hihat, I had to use a utility to translate the midi control messages into notes: GMDrums2AD.So now I can trigger redrum with the TD-8, though I have to say, with the latency and lack of expression on the redrum vs. the TD-8, I rarely use it this way ..honestly, I feel more comfortable creating grooves using a little midi drum pad, or recording the TD-8 into Reaper, then transferring the midi over to reason, which is kind of a hassle, but works.

Reason Drum Kits in Record by James Bernard
In this week’s episode we’ll learn how to load the Reason Drum Kits combinator patches and reroute each drum mic from the standard 14 channel mixer inside the combinator to Record’s main mixer. Doing this allows you to mix your individual drum mics with all the killer EQ and dynamics processing available in every mix channel in record. There is quite simply no better way to get a pro sounding drum mix than mixing each mic individually on a pro-level console.
