Transithor Bass by DrDist

I know there already are plenty of TB-303 combis available on the web, but I’ve decided to release my own version anyway, since I’m getting pretty satisfied of it. It actually consists of 21 combi patches (including both instruments and effects), 3 RNS setups and one multisampling of the square wave ; the idea was to offer more possibilities than the real thing does, besides trying the best I could to reproduce its unique sound.

This project has to be the craziest thing I’ve ever done with Reason in terms of patch design, given the amount of effort I’ve put in it (I’ve been working on it for about one year and a half). Also, the patches mostly consist of some very complex CV routing, so don’t be surprised if your computer has some difficulties to handle them (I’m using a pretty old computer though, it should be ok with a recent one).

The names of the patches should be evocative enough to indicate what they’re doing. The “A B C” thing might be perplexing, but it simply indicates a particular assignment of the mod wheel to the remaining synth parameters (I had to do this since the Combinator only has four knobs). I personally have a little preference for the C patches, but I’ll let you decide which one of those three assignments is the most convenient for you.

ReBirth 303 Update by Dr Dist

The ReBirth 303 combis have been slightly modified. Some minor tweaking to the filter and decay, but most importantly, I tried to find a “not too awkward” way to emulate the ReBirth step sequencer which allows to trigger the accent and filter envelope without actually playing the note. The only solution I found was to limit the velocity range of some devices. Here’s how it works :

- Velocity below 33 triggers the filter envelope only, portamento will affect the next note.
- From 33 to 100 : normal notes.
- From 101 to 112 : accented notes.
- Above 112 : filter envelope and accent decay modulation are triggered.

A 1 bar loop example song is included to show you what it’s all about. The original full-range velocity patches are still there if you don’t need to emulate the step sequencer.

Transisthor Step Sequencer by Dr Dist

I know some of you like to use the Matrix Sequencer for 303 sounds, but the annoying issue with the Matrix is that you can’t adjust precisely the note lengths, which doesn’t allow to accurately reproduce the original 303 step sequencer feel (a 16th note is about 55% long which is roughly equivalent to 132 ticks in the regular sequencer).

So, I finally found a quite handy solution to solve this problem, by using a ms delay and a D-11 distortion. This setup allows to use a Matrix normally, with the ability to lengthen the gate signal in addition. However, since a ms delay can’t be synced to the tempo, you might encounter some “undesired legato” problems at high BPMs (starting at around 170) or when activating the shuffle. If this ever happens, simply turn the Gate Length knob down a bit until it sounds right.

Since it’s a CV based combi you’ll have to route the Gate & Note CV outputs manually. I’ve put two Spider CV devices on top of the combi content to make the routing easier (use one the Split A outputs). Two setup examples are included in the .zip file, one with an empty Matrix and the other with some famous 303 patterns … Well, some of them are not so famous I think, but the other ones should be immediately recognizable.

303 Square Bass by Peff

Multisampled TB-303 Square Wave Oscillator ReFill. 37 individual notes are sampled and Mapped into NN19 patches. It’s pretty phat sounding.

The ReBirth 303 Refill. Multisamples of the virtual 303 instrument recorded through an analog signal chain. The Refill contains specialized combinator patches to emulate the features of the 303 synths.

Square BF318 by Peff

The BassFilter BF318 combinator is an approximation of the TB303 18dB filter for use with the 303 Square Bass refill. Certain settings sound fairly convincing especially with the right ENV MOD setting. Example Reason 3.0 Song File

Flatpack 303 BF318 by Peff

A Bassfilter BF318 combinator for use with the 303 square and sawtooth samples in the Lapjockey Flatpack 1 refill. The combinator features a handy single control switch to flip between the sawtooth and squarewave sample sets.
