How to Process REX Files Using Reason’s NNX-T Sampler by AudioTuts

In Reason, the dedicated loop player is the Dr. Rex. It plays loops contained in REX files. Dr. Rex features a lot of options for pitching, panning and filtering parts of your loop. Sometimes however, you may want to split up a REX loop to process the slices individually for applying different effects to individual slices or sounds in the loop, for example.

Loading REX loops into NN-XT Sampler by Fredrik Hägglund

In case you didn’t know it, here’s a newsflash: NN-XT (as well as NN19) can load REX and REX2 files as Patches. Just like in Dr.REX, the slices are laid out over the keyboard range – one per key – but the possibilities are much greater thanks to all the additional parameters and functions NN-XT offers: per-slice filter, full ADSR envelope, individual outputs and much more. Editing slice parameters in the Dr.REX can be tedious if there are many slices, but in the NN-XT you can save a lot of time by dividing the slices in Groups. The NN-XT is a REX powerhouse.

REX Looping in the NN-XT by Resonant Filter

Last time we spoke a bit about exploring Rex files in Reason and this evening I’d like to delve a little deeper. One thing I didn’t realize when I first started to use Reason was that you could play Rex files with an NNXT sampler. This enables you to do a couple of things, most importantly – looping!

Live Drum Box by Resonant Filter

Today I have a combinator for you that I call the Live Drum Box. This combi uses an NNXT as the host for our Rex file and is hooked up to a RPG-8 arpeggiator unit. This enables the arp patterns to “play” the beats for you when pressing down the keys. Now this in itself is pretty cool, but that’s not all.
